In The Cripples Portfolio (Die Krüppel), 1920, Heinrich Hoerle depicted a range of characters ravaged both physically and psychologically by the effects of World War I. Hoerle’s gentle and lyrical depictions communicate his moving respect and sensitivity toward his subjects. It is in this human empathy and love that a certain hopefulness lies; his is not a world or a people utterly destroyed. Rarely exhibited, this portfolio is a new acquisition of the Art Institute.
