Detail: Scraping to create whitewater on river
Homer demonstrated great dexterity and range of technique with his knife in the execution of The Rapids, Hudson River, Adirondacks. After painting the light areas of water swirling over and around river boulders in pale pink and yellow, Homer scraped out round shapes, one centimeter across, to indicate the brightest spots of white water.
