Detail: Homer's inscription

Aside from a touch of scraping and red glaze along the base of the boat, nothing on the sheet appears reworked through any of the manipulations Homer typically employed. He inscribed the lower-left corner “Sketch from Nature” above his signature and date, designating this as a direct painting from life without studio finish.
