01. Ubu Enchainé (Ubu in Chains). Paris?: publisher not identified, 1937? (Paris: Imprimerie de Rocroy).

Ubu Enchainé is a play written by Alfred Jarry (1873-1907) in 1899, but was never performed in his lifetime. It is part of a series that followed Ubu Roi, which was first performed in 1896. It recounts the tale of Ubu, a grotesque king and symbol of tyranny. This particular edition was printed in an edition of 530 and is illustrated by a great number of artists. Shown here is the illustration by Magritte. The Ryerson’s copy has a Mary Reynolds binding of brown goatskin with onlays on the spine that spell UBU.
