04. Introducing... the Central South Area Plan brochure, November 1960.
This map shows the location of urban renewal development projects on the central south side, including privately-financed rental housing (Prairie Shores, Lake Meadows), public housing (Stateway Gardens, Clarence Darrow Homes), and educational and institutional buildings (IIT, Dunbar High School, Michael Reese Hospital). This plan, which called for approximately 13,000 additional new apartment units to be built in the "gap area" between IIT and Lake Meadows, was never completed. The Gap, as it is still known, exists today and contains many fine turn-of-the-century homes including Frank Lloyd Wright's only known row houses at 3213-3219 S. Calumet Avenue.
