07. "Transportation Center" rendering from Development Plan for the Central Area of Chicago brochure, August 1958.
This rendering illustrates the proposed Transportation Center at Adams Street and the south
branch of the Chicago River. The center was to have incorporated a railroad terminal; downtown
airlines' terminal; heliport; bus terminal for the CTA, airport limousines and intercity
carriers; and major automobile parking facilities. Though the center was never built, similar
schemes have been revisited throughout the years including the city's 2003 Chicago Central Area
Plan, which proposed a West Loop Transportation Center that would provide a direct link between
the CTA rail lines and the city's two busiest commuter rail terminals.
