01. Arthur Clark by Robert L. Reid
In 1892 Captain Arthur Clark was appointed Superintendent of the entire marine fleet at the World's Columbian Exposition and given the title "Commodore." The Fair had a number of boats for use within the 61-acres of interior waterways and lagoons, but also a fleet that could be launched from Lake Michigan. Much like taxis, the boats used in the interior waterways could be hailed by fairgoers. There was also a fleet of gondolas that allowed visitors leisurely and picturesque tours. Commodore Clark was charged with supervising and maintaining these fleets.
