02. Colonel Edmund Rice by C.Y. Turner
Colonel Rice served much of his life in the U.S. Army, first in the U.S. Civil War then later as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Spanish-American War. In March 1892 Rice took charge of the Columbian Guard.
The Columbian Guard, which was under the control and direction of the exposition company, was responsible for all policing and firefighting duties at the World's Columbian Exposition. In 1892 when Colonel Rice was named Commandant of the Guard, it only numbered around fifty men, however by the end of July, 1893 the force had grown to 2,000 men.
