Underground comics arose during a time of political repression, protest movements, and psychedelic drugs. Their creation was in direct response to the establishment of the Comics Code Authority, a code of ethics and standards enacted to hold publishers responsible for any potentially offensive content that might find its way into the hands of American youth. The pages of the undergrounds were ripe with psychedelic cartoon stories and mind-bending abstraction. They also proved to be a perfect outlet for visionary artists such as Rory Hayes as well as an experimental laboratory for comic masters such as Art Spiegelman and Robert Crumb.
