Swiss designer and artist Warja Lavater was an early pioneer in artists books; her Pictograms are a study in sequential abstraction highly resembling the page of a comic book. Although her compositions consist of non-representational lines and shapes, her pictographic studies maintain a peculiar readability through form and rhythm.
