03. Ryerson Library, c.1920.
The corridor of the Ryerson Library (currently the administrative offices) was remodeled in 1920 to house the Burnham Library. Artist and Art Institute trustee Frederick Clay Bartlett painted two murals at the opposite ends of the Burnham Library. Both named Great Walls, one depicts the Great Wall of China, the other the building of a modern skyscraper. From 2,750 volumes in 1919, the number of books on architecture doubled over the next decade, and it became obvious that a move of the Burnham Library was necessary to accommodate this growth.
