Lake Chemical Company (aka Egyptian Lacquer Manufacturing Company Building), 3052 W. Carroll Ave., Chicago. n.d. Lockwood, Greene & Co., architects; Fritz W. Albert, sculptor.
Allen studied photography at the School of the Art Institute (SAIC) and Moholy-Nagy's School of Design; subsequently, he taught photography at the SAIC for more than twenty years. Allen's most extensive photography and research project documented the influence of ancient Egyptian design motifs on American architecture and decorative arts. His interest in "Egyptomania" stemmed from his childhood, when he avidly followed newspaper accounts of Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb.
