Carr's Department Store Graphics Program, 1956-57.
Sutnar is best known as a pioneer of information architecture. He taught at the State School of Graphic Arts in Prague before immigrating to the United States in 1939. In his graphic design programs he wished to "project a specific selling objective into forceful visual expression...using such means as color, symbol, picture, type and the like..." For the Carr's store he developed a coordinated color palette, font, and use of symbols to identify the various departments.
