During the early 19th century fashion publications began to move away from plates of historical costumes to fashion plates, which highlighted the fashionable garments of the moment. Journal des Dames was one of the periodicals that shifted from costume to fashion, but also survived the turn of the century unlike many others of this period. It was also published in a German edition in Frankfurt from 1799 to 1848. The plates included in the magazine were all titled "Costumes Parisiens" and numbered consecutively between 1797 and 1839.

The Ryerson and Burnham Libraries have only three volumes of this periodical: v.24 (1820), v.26 (1822), and v.27 (1823).
