Symposium “Sunday Afternoon with La Grande Jatte: Calculation and Intuition in Art from Seurat to the Present“ Sunday, September 19 1:00 p.m.3:30 p.m. The investigation of A Sunday on La Grande Jatte1884 by scholars, conservators and color scientists has produced a revised image of Seurat and his masterpiece that is at the heart of the exhibition Seurat and the Making of "La Grande Jatte." Instead of a master planner who applied rules in a mechanical way, we now know that Seurat was an artist who, like other artists, built up experience through the act of painting and whose masterpiece evolved in reaction to what he saw as he worked. The curators of the exhibition, Douglas Druick and Gloria Groom, will host a panel discussion to mark the conclusion of this groundbreaking exhibition and to look further into the notion of artistic intentions and methods during and since Seurat's time. Scheduled discussants include art historians Robert L. Herbert, Richard Shiff, Joachim Pissarro, and preeminent British artist Bridget Riley. The panel is free to the public with museum admission. Please call (312) 443-3680 for more information.
