Solarization

Print solarization occurs when a photograph is briefly exposed to light mid-development. This can lend unusual effects to an image, including dark outlines and a reversal of tones. In platinum or palladium prints, solarization often makes normally bright areas appear gray or black, while the darkest areas appear brown. Alfred Stieglitz claimed to have been the first to intentionally use solarization in 1919.
