Chinese Scrolls The horizontal handscroll normally consists of a silk or paper panel containing a painted image or calligraphy passage as well as a title panel, which bears the name of the work, and a colophon panel, upon which are written notes or poems pertaining to the work. Notes or inscriptions were often added by various owners over the centuries. A label with information pertaining to the artist, title, and date is often affixed to the back of the hanging scroll.
