After heavy fighting on March 12, the troops of the First Belarusian Front captured the city and fortress of Kostrzyn (Küstrin). This is a key junction of the Germans' lines of communication and a strong point of leverage for the Germans' defenses on the river Oder, which have been blocking attacks on Berlin.
