War: Mystical Images of War (Voina: Misticheskie Obrazy Voiny) was one of the last projects that Natalia Goncharova (1881–1962) completed before leaving Russia for Switzerland in 1914. This Neo-primitivist series, a response to the outbreak of World War I, relentlessly unites celestial beings with earthly conflicts. Here saints and angels are not always benevolent as they mingle with the forces of the physical world.
