Aleksandr Nikolaevich Volkov entered St. Petersburg University in 1905 after graduating from the Orenburg Military Academy. Dropping out of school after only a few years of coursework, he enrolled in classes in David Bortniker’s watercolor studio. From 1908 to 1910, he studied at the Preparatory School of the Imperial Academy of Arts with Vladimir Maiakovskii. Volkov attended the private art school maintained by Mikhail Bernshtein from 1910 to 1911. From 1912 to 1916, he studied at the Kiev Art School, Ukraine, with the painters Fedor Krichevskii and Vladimir Menk. In 1919 he was appointed director of the State Museum of Central Asia in Tashkent. In 1922 he became director of the Theater of Proletarian Culture in Tashkent, and joined AKhRR in 1927. In 1941 he was given the title Honored Worker of Arts of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic. Volkov designed approximately sixteen posters for the TASS studio between December 1941 and the summer of 1946. In 1946 he was awarded the honorific title People’s Artist of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic.
