Sir Guillaume-François (Frank) Brangwyn’s (1867–1954) war posters and prints stand out from others in this exhibition for their limited chromatic range, restricted as they are to basic black and white, and for their graphic fervor, which adds an emotional dimension to the works. Brangwyn received some training under the leader of the English Arts and Crafts movement, William Morris (1834–1896), but was mostly self-taught. He executed his WWI–related prints and posters without having been an eyewitness to events taking place on Europe’s battlefields. Instead, he made these in his London studio, using photographs obtained from news agencies and illustrations from newspapers and periodicals.
