Christopher Williams, whose first retrospective exhibition is on view at the Art Institute of Chicago through May 18, 2014, has been making photographs for over four decades. Within his oeuvre is a series of photographs that the artist does not take himself. Rather, Williams facilitates the production by hiring professionals including photography studios, models and floral designers, in order to achieve precision in every element of his technically perfect images. In his highly conceptualized process, the artist chooses subjects that indirectly refer to past political states or upheavals, which he also reinforces in his choice of location, make of camera and stock of film. Williams exhaustively details the methods and means of making the photographs in each work's title.
