The Maharam Fabric Corporation was founded, inauspiciously, in 1902, from the wheels of Louis Maharam’s Lower East Side pushcart. Making their mark first in the “costume parade” of the 1940s and 1950s, the company then moved towards the complex, engineered textiles—intended to complement postwar modern furniture and architecture designs55—which have for many decades won them acclaim in architectural and interior design circles.56 In April 2013, the company was acquired by the design giant Herman Miller, Inc.
