On May 27, 1951 Marcel Duchamp presented Frank B. Hubachek with preliminary drawings for the Mary Reynolds Collection bookplate. Hubachek stated in a letter dated June 28, 1951 that "we must get this just right Marcel, and time is not important." For nearly three years they corresponded back and forth about the bookplate design. Ultimately, Duchamp chose a profile view to showcase a pair of earrings designed for Reynolds by Alexander Calder.

Duchamp sent Hubachek several proofs using a variety of papers and inks. The bookplate design would have been complete at this point, but Hubachek was disturbed by the words "Given by her brother" that appeared below the image, finding this statement "superfluous and egotistical," a point on which Duchamp concurred. This statement was removed, and with this final adjustment made, the finished bookplates were presented to Hugh Edwards, then Associate Curator of Photography, Department of Prints and Drawings, on March 5, 1954. Edwards was, at that time, compiling the catalogue of the Mary Reynolds Collection.
