Materials Research
As part of the research related to this site, forty-four photographs from the Art Institute’s Stieglitz Collection have undergone a material-based analysis. The works chosen for this reflect the collection’s range; included are at least one work from nearly every artist, one of each medium, and one from each phase of Stieglitz’s career. In addition, certain unique photographic objects (for example, Edward Steichen’s pair of gum-platinum prints of Midnight—Lake George) were selected. The results for each of the forty-four objects, including a technical summary and data from the nondestructive methods used by the Art Institute’s conservation scientists, are included in the Object Research PDF found on the individual artwork pages. To learn more about the methods used by conservators to generate these analyses, read the About Materials Research tab.
