Born St. Petersburg, 1887; died Moscow, 1949

The son of Konstantin Savitskii, a painter associated with the Wanderers, Georgii Konstantinovich Savitskii graduated in 1908 from the Penza Art School, where his father served as director, and was accepted to the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg without taking any qualifying exams. He studied there from 1908 to 1915 under Vladimir Maiakovskii and Frants Ribo and was awarded a trip abroad for his thesis painting. In 1922 Savitskii cofounded AKhRR. He was active in the 1930s primarily as a battle painter, and from 1935 to 1938, he directed the brigade of artists working on the diorama The Storming of Perekop (Central Museum of Armed Forces, Moscow). Savitskii was a major contributor to the TASS studio, for which he designed approximately forty posters between June 1941 and January 1946. In 1942 he was awarded the Stalin Prize and given the honorific title Honored Worker of Arts of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.
