Petr Mitrofanovich Shukhmin apprenticed in the studio of Vasilii Meshkov in Moscow in 1912. He then moved to St. Petersburg to study in the Imperial Academy of Arts under Dmitrii Kardovskii, Aleksandr Makovskii, and Ivan Tvorozhnikov. His studies were interrupted in 1916 when he was drafted into the Russian army. In 1921, following his demobilization, he returned to Moscow where he helped found AKhRR the following year. In the 1920s and 1930s, he published cartoons in the satirical magazines Krasnaia niva and Krasnyi perets. Between June 1941 and September 1945, Shukhmin designed roughly forty posters for the TASS studio. He was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1941.
