CHAGALL and Chicago

Marc Chagall began his relationship with the city of Chicago in 1946, when he attended the opening of a retrospective dedicated to his work held at the Art Institute. He would return again in 1958 to lecture at the invitation of the University of Chicago's Committee on Social Thought. During his visits, Chagall was pleased to discover a number of his works in public and private collections within the city, and he formed lasting friendships with his admirers and patrons. Among them were Eleanor and William Wood-Prince, collectors, generous philanthropists, and benefactors of the Art Institute, who would soon make possible a great gift to the city.
