Bless, Boudicca, Sandra Backlund

Boudicca’s employment of film is often strategic, giving Broach and Kirkby the means to illustrate an idea that might prove less emotive if captured in photography or presented in a traditional fashion show. As its name suggests, the Motion Capture Sequin Dress speaks directly to this idea. Part of Boudicca’s Fragmented Dreams collection, the dress is best understood if viewed in action; when you move your hands across the dress, the sequins flip over, leaving a trail that reflects the motion. To represent this effect, rather than displaying a single image of the dress, the film features a grid of four images, each showing a model with cropped hair at various stages of passing her hands over the dress. The simultaneous, multiple images enhance the mesmerizing effect of the dress.

See it in motion.
