Book: Photography within the Humanities

During the month of April 1975, Wellesley College hosted several photographers in a series of ten symposia called Photography within the Humanities. Participates included John Morris, Paul Taylor, Gjon Mili, Robert Frank, Frederick Wiseman, John Szarkowski, W. Eugene Smith, Susan Sontag, Irving Penn, and Robert Coles. Irving Penn spoke at Wellesley College on April 23, 1975, and the transcript of his lecture begins on p. 122. He discussed the aims of the magazine fashion phototographer and portraitist, drawing on his experiences at Vogue, but also discussed the relationship between fashion and portrait photography in his career, his book projects, and his recent still life series, the cigarette butts printed large in platinum metals.
