Head

Comparison of the grayscale images of the head of Back (III) and Back (IV) clearly shows how Matisse worked toward further clarity and simplicity, making a unified singular mass that covered over the deeply carved spine of the earlier state. The artist added and smoothed layers of plaster over the raised arm, concealing the roughly worked surface of Back (III).
