Overlay of horizontal cross section of the back

Overlaid cross sections of Back (III), orange, and Back (IV), purple, from the middle of the back show Matisse's modifications to the spine, where he carved away material from the left and middle sections. The artist expanded the volume on each side, especially the right, by adding plaster to the recesses between the torso and the arm.
