Published beginning in 1830, Godey's Magazine was for a time the most successful women's magazine in the United States. Each issue featured a hand-colored fashion plate as well as copper, wood, or steel engravings, sheet music, and clothing patterns. The plates were often copied from illustrations that appeared in French periodicals. After Sarah Josepha Hale joined the magazine as editor in 1837 the magazine also became an important literary magazine, publishing works by such authors as Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edgar Allen Poe, and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
The Ryerson and Burnham Libraries have most volumes issued from 1842 to 1885, however the holdings are not complete.
