Between 1927 and 1933 the architect Iakov Chernikhov published a series of largely self-funded books, which included Ornament: Classically Composed Structures (1931), The Construction of Architectural and Machine Forms (1931), and Architectural Fantasies (1933). Although a practicing architect, neither Chernikhov nor his work was well known, for he did not associate himself with such avant-garde architecture circles as the Constructivists or the so-called Rationalists that formed in the Soviet Union throughout the 1920s. Rather, Chernikhov devoted most of his efforts to teaching and developing new pedagogies that advocated the use of graphic art as a means of solving compositional problems.
