    Exhibition catalogue devoted to van Gogh's artistic production in Arles from1888 to May of 1889. One chapter is devoted to Gauguin's stay in Arles. Pickvance redates a number of works based on a closer look at van Gogh's correspondence.

    Uitert, Evert van. Vincent van Gogh in Creative Competition: Four Essays from Simiolus. Zutphen, the Netherlands: Nauta, 1983.

    A collection of four essays by Uitert, first published in the Dutch art history journal Simiolus between 1977 and 1982. The essays, which are translated into English, focus on van Gogh's often turbulent relationship with Paul Gauguin. The book is aimed at a scholarly audience.


    Hulsker, Jan. Vincent and Theo van Gogh, a Dual Biography. Ann Arbor, Mich.: Fuller Publications, 1990.

    Hulsker incorporates a wealth of previously unpublished material in this detailed biography of the van Gogh brothers. His redating of many letters allows him to draw new conclusions about their careers and relationships.

    Kodera, Tsukasa. Vincent van Gogh: Christianity versus Nature. Amsterdam and Philadelphia: John Benjamins, 1990.

      Kodera explores the tension between natural and Christian themes in van Gogh's paintings. He discusses van Gogh's deep roots in Christianity as well as his interest in current French novels and Japanese art.

    Mancoff, Debra N. Sunflowers. Chicago: The Art Institute of Chicago, 2001.

    A beautifully illustrated study of the sunflower motif in art, science, and literature from pre-Columbian times to the early twentieth century. Although this book is not on van Gogh, the essays included here provide a context in which to better understand his use of the sunflower theme.

    Zemel, Caroline M. The Formation of a Legend: Van Gogh Criticism, 1890–1920. Ann Arbor, Mich.: UMI Research Press, 1980.

      A survey of criticism of van Gogh's work, dating from his death to thirty years later. The book is divided into two time frames (1890–1900 and 1900–1920) and then by region (Germany, France and England, and the Netherlands).

    A collection of eighty-four letters written during Gauguin's stay in Tahiti and the Marqueses between 1891 and 1903.  Monfried was a close friend and financial backer of Gauguin's. Some of Monfreid's letters to Gauguin are included in a separate section of the book. Text is in French.

    English translations of selected letters by the artist.
