Objectives

Children listen to the music of Steven Foster and Frederic Chopin and describe what they have heard verbally or in written form. Students also compare Foster and Chopin works to other musical forms.

Materials

  • tape recorder or disc player
  • Chopin music
  • Foster music
  • other music in ranging styles (e.g., jazz, blues, rap, rock, country)

Procedures

  • Have students examine the murals on the Web or at Chopin elementary. Ask: What do you see? What is happening? How does the artist suggest the feeling of music in the mural?
  • Have students close their eyes and listen to the chosen music.
  • Let students begin to move their arms to the feeling of the music. Slowly let students add their legs, fingers, neck, and hips.
  • Have students write at least five words that describe how they feel while listening to the music being played. This may be done orally with younger students, with the teacher writing the words for them.
  • Have students describe what their movements were in writing or orally.
  • Conduct the above steps with different styles of music.
  • Have students compare and contrast their feelings and movements with different forms of music.

Evaluation

Assess students on the basis on their verbal and written work and ability to describe and compare styles of music.

Follow-up

Have students use art materials, such as watercolor or India ink, to create images inspired by the music in the lesson.
