Objectives

Students write and draw fairy tales based on modern themes and/or their own experiences.

Materials
Traditional and modern illustrated books such as:

  • The Three Little Pigs
  • Goldilocks and the Three Bears
  • Cinderella
  • The Gingerbread Boy
  • Little Red Riding Hood

Procedures

  • Have students discuss the subjects and stories in the mural. Ask: Can you identify the figures? How do you know who they are (i.e., by clothing, attributes or setting)?
  • Read aloud one or two fairy tales illustrated in Elvis’s murals. Ask: Who are the main characters? What is the setting? What is the plot? What is the central problem and how is it resolved?
  • Divide the class into groups and assign each a fairy tale. Have the groups develop a modern story based on this fairy tale through group discussion.
  • Divide students in each group into: a.) writers of a story book based on their modern fairy tale; b.) book illustrators; and c.) "free spirits," who create story characters into dolls or parts of a hanging mobile assembled by them or the teacher.
  • Have student groups present their stories and art orally to the class.
  • Display books and art projects in the classroom or other school site.

Evaluation

Assess students on the basis of their written and creative work, and oral presentations.

Follow-up

Have students act out their stories as a performance.
