The painter, graphic designer and art critic Otakar Mrkvička became a member of Devětsil in 1922. Karel Teige and Mrkvička worked closely together from 1924-1926 on a number of book covers. In early works representing a new approach to book cover design, Teige and Mrkvička used mainly typographical elements arranged in novel ways along with basic shapes and colors. Their design for the title page of Nezval's Karneval is an excellent example of this innovative typography. The cover for Apollinaire's Le Poète Assassiné (Zavražděný Básník) is a rare example of the influence of Purism on the designs of Teige and Mrkvička.
