RAW magazine was co-edited by François Mouly and Art Spiegelman. Through careful curation of the artists and work that appeared in their anthology, Mouly and Spiegelman intended to establish comics as a serious artistic medium. RAW focused on publishing work by avant-garde artists like Joost Swarte and Gary Panter. Gaining the attention of many young artists at the time, RAW encouraged artists like Ware to approach comics with a new brand of inventiveness.
