In art museums, conservators research and preserve works of art using a variety of analytical methods to study their component materials and mechanisms of deterioration. Frank Zuccari discusses how historical research and scientific methods helped attribute a painting in the Art Institute’s collection to the well-known 18th-century French artist, Jean-Antoine Watteau.
